Work is well underway on a ground-breaking new affordable housing scheme in Gloucester.

The £1.7 million project, at Frampton Road, Gloucester will provide 14 much-needed affordable housing units, along with a new vicarage.

Rooftop Housing Group is driving the scheme, working with the Anglican Diocese of Gloucester, Faith in Affordable Housing and Gloucester City Council.

Rachel Lathan, Chair of Evesham and Pershore Housing Association, the social housing arm of Rooftop Housing Group, said: “This is a really innovative scheme that brings together many partners, tackling a wide range of issues and providing practical solutions. As well as delivering new homes and a new vicarage, the project will help to regenerate a key brownfield site, stimulate the local economy and provide employment opportunities.”

The scheme will provide nine 1- bed flats for young homeless people in Gloucester, one 3-bed house for ‘move on’ accommodation, two 3-bed affordable houses and two 1-bed houses available for shared ownership, as well as the new vicarage.

Contractor Markey Construction started groundwork in March 2013 and completion is due on all units by November. Coinciding with the project, the partners have created an opportunity for one local youngster to work in a three-year apprenticeship with Markey Construction and Gloucestershire College. The apprenticeship will be offered to one of the young people currently being supported G3 (the support and care arm of Rooftop Housing Group).

Tracey Bessant, Project Co-ordinator for Faith in Affordable Housing, said: ‘This is an excellent example of the imaginative use of under-utilised church land and property and shows what can be achieved when Churches have the desire to help those in housing need’.

The Bishop of Gloucester Michael Perham added: “This project has been a great example of partnership working between the Church and the charitable sector. We will be providing much needed housing, whilst also supporting the most vulnerable young people. To see the start of this build is very exciting.”

The project at Frampton Road will enable Rooftop Housing Group to provide accommodation to young homeless people that were previously being housed at nearby property which it no longer owns. The scheme is also one of three developments that Rooftop Housing Group has on stream with the Diocese of Gloucester as part of their aims to help improve the local environment and to deliver more affordable homes in Gloucestershire.

The company has been awarded the three contracts by Worcestershire-based Rooftop Housing Group.

The first scheme, a £1.4m development at Frampton Road, is already underway. The project includes the demolition of the old St Stephen's vicarage to make way for a new vicarage and 15 affordable homes.

Markey has also been appointed to a £500,000 scheme in Worcestershire and been awarded a £1.1m contract to provide planned maintenance works for Rooftop for a third successive year.

Markey managing director Richard Dudgeon said: "We're delighted to have extended our contract with them and we regard them as a valued partner."

David Hannon, development director at Rooftop Housing Group, added: "Our partnership with Markey goes from strength to strength.

"They understand our commitment to ensuring that the investment we make in local communities delivers high quality results and makes a real difference to people's lives."

Cottsway Housing Association has started work on a £1.7 million eco-friendly housing scheme in north Gloucestershire.

Built by Gloucester-based Markey Construction, the development at Staunton consists of 15 homes, most of which have either two or three bedrooms.

Designed to meet the latest energy efficiency standards and scheduled for completion in November 2013, all properties will have rainwater harvesting
and air source heat pumps that absorb heat from the outside air which is then used in radiators or underfloor heating to provide hot water.

Air source heat pumps have a beneficial impact on the environment because even though they need electricity to run, the heat they extract from the
air is constantly renewed naturally.

Adrian Miller, Cottsway’s head of development, said: “We are very pleased with this well-designed and sustainable development in Staunton. It is the
latest of a number of rural schemes we have developed in Gloucestershire in partnership with Markey over the past five years.

“These 15 new homes will help meet the need for affordable rural housing for families with a local connection who are otherwise unable to afford to
purchase or rent on the open market.”

The Staunton scheme is the latest in a string of Gloucestershire developments built for Cottsway Housing Association by Markey Construction and recent
projects include a £1.1m scheme at Wyman’s Brook, a £1.3m development at Hester’s Way Road in Cheltenham and 13 properties on Over Old Road in Hartpury.

Markey Construction has started work on an £800,000 affordable housing scheme in Cropthorne, south Worcestershire.
The development is set to be completed by April 2013 and will see eight new houses built at Field Barn Lane.
It will be the second development that Markey has built for Festival Housing, after completing a 14 home scheme in Malvern in April 2011.
Richard Dudgeon, managing director of Markey Construction, said: "It's great to be working with Festival again. We specialise in building high quality, affordable rural homes so this development is a perfect fit for us."
Dudgeon added that he believed the scheme would be an "asset to the local community".
Markey Construction is a construction project company specialising in affordable rural housing.
